| O
Very Lucky Man!
In
the second part of his interview with Sean McCarthy, Malcolm
McDowell talks about working with legendary directors like
Stanley Kubrick and Tinto Brass on classic films such as Iff...,
O Lucky Man!, A Clockwork Orange and Caligula.
Malcolm McDowell is now 61, and can boast a
body of work that includes some of the greatest films of all
time, directed by a parade of the finest to ever stand behind
the cameras and shout 'Action!'. Yet Malcolm McDowell remains
calm, charming, and very giving of his time to those of us
who have so many more questions to ask.
Throughout our chat Malcolm breaks into various
characters and uncanny impersonations of his old acting and
directing friends and colleagues. But throughout, Malcolm
remains... Malcolm.
Sean: You acted in three directed by your
colleague, the late Lindsay Anderson: If..., O Lucky
Man! and Britannia Hospital. What was it about
the way he directed that saw you both work together so often?
Describe the chemistry between you both?
Malcolm: Of course there was great
chemistry, and I liked him very much as a person, and I suppose
he liked me. We just got on very well, and was a mentor to
me. I was very young, I was 24 when he cast me to star in
If..., and I was sort of a 'young' 24 I think I wasn't
very worldly. Lindsay really taught me the ropes, and he gave
me great insight into the film business. We became colleagues
then; we wrote O Lucky Man! with David Sherwin myself
and Lindsay we really all made a contribution to that script.
It's actually my favourite film of all of them.
