Scoring
Points
For this year's Filmmakers' Lab, Moonstone
International has brought their successful composers' module
to Wexford; the module was supported by FÁS Screen
Training Ireland, IMRO and the Arts Council. The module attaches
upcoming composers to score the segments shot and edited by
the filmmakers. Denise Woods attended the Lab to find out
the score.
The 2006 Moonstone Filmmakers Lab took
place from the 30th of January to the 9th of February in Wexford.
Eight participating directors travelled to the idyllic settings
of the Ferrycarrig Hotel to lock themselves away and work
on sections of their scripts with help from experienced film
crews, advisors and editors. The eight directors came mainly
from Europe, and some from further afield. The participants
were Ann Chakraverty (France), Maria Essen (Sweden), Tinge
Krishnan (UK), Terry McMahon (Ireland), Christine Parker (UK),
Ian Power (Ireland), Sean Spencer (UK), and James Watkins
(UK). This Filmmakers Lab is the ninth one to date,
but it is only the second lab to include the composers' module.
This year is the first time that IMRO (the Irish Music Rights
Organisation) has been involved in the module. Jean-Luc Ormières,
the artistic director of Moonstone, feels that the implementation
of the composers module was one of great significance: Its
important that the director and composer can experience a
nearly real-life condition of working together, its
something that I feel is not taught in the schools. Directors
and composers need to find that common language, as the journey
for both is very important. Its a complex process, scoring
a film, and here at Moonstone we try to give a taste of how
that feels.
