Michael Open talks to Ed Guiney and Audrey Sheils about Element Pictures’ distribution arm.

One of the curious and little-known aspects of international film distribution is that the world is divided into ‘territories’ that do not always correspond with individual countries. For the purpose of theatrical distribution of films, when you buy a film for the UK, you also get it for the Republic of Ireland. This can have its downside. However, one of Ireland’s leading production companies, Element Pictures, decided that it would try to buck the system and started its own distribution arm. Simon Perry alluded to this with enthusiasm in the last issue of Film Ireland, so we decided to find out more.

The company is headed by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe and has been responsible for several major feature films of recent years including Adam & Paul and Garage. It was also part of the large consortium behind The Wind That Shakes the Barley.
