Paul Farren reports from the recent Galway Film Fleadh, which
featured an array of new Irish talent, along with a number
of interesting international strands.
We came, we saw, we were conquered. Yet another invasion of
Galway claimed many victims. Boasting fine films, the Fleadh
seduced many a poor soul, and some had a hard time getting
out of Galway afterwards. But that's another story.
As usual there was a lot to see at the Fleadh, including programmes
of South Korean and German cinema as well as a strand of Extreme
Cinema which was also the centre of a debate held later in
the week. What was especially of interest this year was the
Irish contingent, which boasted a record number of Irish feature
debuts. The range of these was diverse and all were contemporary
pieces, excepting Sean Walsh's Ulysses adaptation, the curiously
titled Bl.,m.
