Kingdom Comes of Age
Not to be left out of Ireland's progressive
family of film festivals, Kerry is rapidly establishing itself
as a force to be reckoned with. Now in its fourth year the
2003 festival attracted the likes of Neil Jordan, a special
preview of In America and the short Yu Ming is Ainm
Dom.
Truly unique as an all-encompassing county festival, it covers
venues in Kerry's main towns (Killarney, Listowel, Dingle
and Tralee) and anywhere in-between courtesy of the Cinemobile
which integrates it with local smaller communities. Going
from strength to strength, the 2003 festival (held from 20th
to 26th October) read like a who's-who of Irish Film.
A long time supporter of the KFF and present
at the Gala Awards Ceremony, Kevin Moriarty, managing director
of Ardmore Studios is consistently impressed by what he sees
at the festival: "It's genuinely giving access to people
to see films throughout the county. It's not elitist, the
audience is drawn from a cross-section of the community, which
is healthy from the point of view of the filmmaker, as they
can see how a film is appreciated by a general audience from
all walks of life. It gives new filmmakers exposure to the
real world of real audiences who are more critical, and filmmakers
can learn from them." Ardmore donated the best director
prize of a package deal with the studios worth €10,000.
