What do you get when you take the man on the moon, an adorable little girl, soldiers with hilarious noses, a grandad who talks from a painting and put them all into a movie? You get a film that surpasses all others – Moonman.
Delve into the imagination of a child and experience a sparkling, majestical movie without the usual clichés that typically accompany a fairytale. Moonman is an inspiring, almost faultless film that will release the inner child in those of all ages. This German short film is a welcome change from the endless recycled Disney films we are regularly subjected to. It tells the blissful tale of the lonely man on the moon whose one wish is to visit the planet Earth. One little German girl notices him and understands his utter despair that he cannot come to Earth. However, nobody believes her that there is a man in the moon. Some parts of the film are rather predictable: with perfect timing, a meteor falls through space and the Moonman hitches a ride to earth, and – surprise, surprise – manages to land bang in the village of the little girl. The local army ain’t too happy about all this. The little girl and her scientist Grandad (who lives in a painting) must do something to help him.
The movie floats along in a little fantasy bubble of magic and glitter. Occasionally there is great suspense and fear but it always bobs back up again into the joyful storyline. The twinkly orchestral music sets a happy, classical feel to the film, giving it an almost dreamlike quality. The plot has a steady pace that keeps the viewer interested the whole way through.
Moonman is a heart-warming, feel-good film that will appeal to people of all ages seeking an enjoyable, magical fairytale film. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone willing to place aside thirty minutes of their time to be utterly entranced in a different world – you will not be disappointed.
