I thought the short movie New Boy was fantastic. It was about a young black boy, I think he was around ten or eleven, who saw his father been shot in school in Africa. He then left his country and came to Ireland where he started a new school and had to deal with all his own emotional issues like losing his father, not alone moving town but moving country, making new friends, trying to fit in, different cultures, etc. Then on top of this he starts to be bullied in the new school.
However, by the close of the movie all is well, of course. The bully ends up befriending the new boy and this for me was a nice close to the movie.
I liked this story because I think our country is changing, we have all different nationalities and I think this story sends the message across that we should accept people for what they are and respect them. It makes you realise that although we may have different coloured skin we are still all the same. We should all be considerate of one another and also we should remember that when someone new starts at our school or club it’s hard for them. Maybe, like the boy, they don't know anyone so we should maybe help and include them.
The acting in this short film was terrific, the kids were so normal. They were sometimes cruel, mean, funny, sad, and happy. The film was like an emotional journey for the new boy, I think. The location of the film was excellent and the camera crew did a great job.
To end, I'd give the movie ten out of ten. It was a story that held my interest and even I too felt some of those emotions that the new boy was going through because it was a story that I could relate to. This journey that the new boy was going through happens everyday of the week. Finally, I'd love this to be made into a longer movie.
