Former Editor Tony
Keily on his contribution to Film Ireland 96.
Dear Film Ireland,
When resigning as editor of Film Ireland and discussing the magazine's future, I proposed to its publishers
Filmbase that I act as Commissioning Editor for Issue 96 of
the magazine, to assist in a smooth transition to a new editorship,
but also, let it be said, out of selfish desire to receive
some credit for the work I had already put into that number.
Although it had been agreed that I would be described as Com.
Ed. in the magazine, I received no credit in the issue in
question, apart from a note attributing the commissioning
of Perry Ogden's interview with Anthony Dod Mantle to myself.
I am obviously completely content with the explanation of
the current Editor (my good friend Lir) that this was simply
an oversight.
This point might seem petty if it weren't for
the fact that, when credited as a staffer, any in-house contributor
for the magazine can be expected to do any amount of not specifically
attributed work for a given issue. As I'm not featured as
a staffer on Page 5 of the issue of the magazine in question,
there is no due recognition given to the fact that not only
did I commission many of the articles in the issue in question
(not to mention the proper back-issues ad on the inside back-cover,
which fulfilled a long nurtured aspiration), but that I spent
long hours editing some of them, as well as editing and overseeing
the publication of the Julio Medem special featured on the
website. It of course goes without saying that the vast bulk
of the work done on Issue 96, including all the excellent
ground-up labour on most of what I commissioned, was done
after my departure.
That's all. And now I'm getting up the yard.
Hopefully for good.
Tony Keily
