Backing by the MEDIA Programme of the EU to Be Continued – 18th November 2008

New three-year support allows EFP to continue promotional programmes inside and outside of Europe for the years 2009–2011.

European Film Promotion (EFP) announces a Framework Partnership Agreement with the MEDIA Programme of the European Union for the years 2009–2011 for the support of promotional activities inside and outside of Europe.

MEDIA's support is two-fold. EFP will receive €480,000 for promotional events and activities inside of Europe and €766,000 for events and activities outside of Europe, including Film Sales Support (FSS).

EFP will organise 11 promotional events a year between 2009 and 2011. Additionally, EFP will continue to offer Film Sales Support (FSS) to qualifying sales companies. This programme complements EFP's existing activities by helping European sales agents market their films at selected international film festivals and, for the first time ever, at major international markets, such as the FILMART in Hong Kong, the AFM in Los Angeles and the Asian Film Market in Pusan. FSS puts special emphasis on North and South America as well as East Asia to help with the visibility of European film in these countries. This support is available for Sundance Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara Mexico, Shanghai International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, and American Film Market.

FSS offers maximum grants of up to €5,000 for one film and €2,500 for a second film per festival to cover up to 50% of the costs for promotional activities undertaken by the sales representatives. Costs incurred at international markets, such as stand rentals and market screenings, are now also reimbursable.

More information about the individual events are available on EFP's website: www.efp-online.com

Aisling’s Diary, which premiered on RTÉ Two on the 1st September, was nominated due to its strong interactive element, and has proven popular with Irish audiences. Viewers are invited onto the show’s web page, where they can keep up-to-date with what’s happening in Aisling’s life through blogs, episodes, interviews, behind the scenes footage and interact with the characters themselves.  Episodes are also broadcast on-line at http://www.rte.ie/tv/ttv/aislingsdiary/

Seoda: Irish Film Archive Films to Air on TG4 – 24th September 2008

Seoda is a new series of films from the Irish Film Archive that will be broadcast on TG4 this Autumn, starting this Wednesday 24th September. The series features of newly-restored works which have been selected from thousands of films preserved in the national collection for their cultural and entertainment value. The series will go out from Wednesday 24th September at 9pm on TG4 and on 7 consecutive Wednesdays thereafter until Wednesday 12th November. Repeats are on Friday nights from Friday 26th September, and on 7 consecutive Fridays thereafter until Friday 14th November 2008.

Seoda offers a glimpse of Irish life and times from 1948-1970: President Kennedy on his 1963 cavalcade visiting Dublin, Wexford and Galway; the last tram from Howth in the company of Cyril Cusack; the bustle of 1950s Dublin (Portrait of Dublin) and the quietly abandoned village of Crookhaven in Cork. There’s also traditional music keenly observed by Louis Marcus in Flea Ceoil. The eleven films in the series cover a broad range of topics including emigration, politics, personal saving, TB, diphtheria and architecture. The programme themes are deeply rooted in Irish culture, heritage and experience and many are presented here as Gaeilge.

Introductions to the programmes have been written by Ireland’s leading documentary historian Dr Harvey O Brien and are presented in Irish by highly-respected actor Niall Toibin. The series, produced by the Irish Film Institute and IFI Curator Sunniva O’Flynn in collaboration with Lotus Films, is distinguished by the technical excellence of the archival images – all of the titles have undergone meticulous pictorial and audio restoration from original film formats using the latest transfer technologies.

Funded by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland as part of the Sound and Vision Scheme and by TG4. The IFI is funded by the Arts Council.

Documentary Chippers to Screen at the IFI – 23rd September 2008

The Filmbase documentary Chippers is to premiere on Saturday 27th September at 12 am, at the IFI as part of the Stranger Than Fiction festival. Nino Tropiano’s hour-long documentary made its Italian premiere at the Hai Visto Mai documentary festival in Siena, where it was awarded a Special Mention.

Chippers tells the story of Dublin’s well-established community of four thousand Italians who have owned chip shops in the city since the 1900s. Five different families tell their stories and offer insight into the experience of how a small community has preserved their cultural identity and link with their country of origins, while at the same time seamlessly assimilating into their host country.

This film features archive footage of the city of Dublin and extracts of short documentaries sourced from the Irish Film Archive and from Istituto Luce (Italy). It is a nostalgic, melancholic and at times funny portrait of the early struggle and integration of this unique community.

The film was initially funded through the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Award scheme with additional funding by the Irish Film Board.

Digital Film Installation at Temple Bar Gallery & Studios – 22nd September 2008

From 26 September –1 November 2008, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios will be presenting Here Lies in film... a digital film installation by Operating Theatre (Olwen Fouere and Roger Doyle) in collaboration with master cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love, Lady in the Water) and edited by Simon Hudson. The film extends and reworks a durational installation Here Lies, which Operating Theatre first made with theatre director Selina Cartmell in 2005. This work is inspired by the account and experience of Antonin Artaud (1896-1948), the hugely influential French playwright, poet, actor and director.

In 1937, prompted by an apocalyptic vision, Artaud travelled to Ireland seeking a resting place for a ‘walking stick of knotted wood’, which he believed to be the staff of St Patrick. After much travelling (and some time spent in jail) Artaud was eventually deported from Cobh and on re-entry to France, incarcerated in an asylum for ten years. His trip to Ireland is often described as the beginning of the end.

Operating Theatre creates performance-based work with music as a core element. In its twenty-eight year history, Operating Theatre has produced a diverse portfolio of work using processes which have included the integration of music technology with original composition, found and commissioned texts, and live performance. The company’s work has been presented in both conventional and non-theatrical environments. Here Lies in film is the company’s inaugural piece in this medium.
