Competition Winners Film Ireland Jul/Aug Issue – 1st September 2008

The winners of the Film Ireland Jul/Aug Issue competition were: Daniel Alexander, Eoin Casey, Mark Quinn, Michael McGuigan, Fiachra Trench and Steven Galvin.

All six winners will receive a copy of Lights, Camera, Dynamite, the revealing memoir of Irish special effects director Gerry Johnston and a pair of tickets to a movie of their choice at Light House Cinema, Smithfield.

The question asked was: Dementia 13, shot in Ardmore Studios and on location in Ireland, is the feature film debut of which director?

Answer: Francis Ford Coppola

Web/Mobile Phone Film Competition – 1st September 2008

The second edition of the 4 Screens European Festival is inviting submissions for a short Web/Mobile Phone film competition about ‘the city’. European filmmakers are invited to bring ‘city life to life’ in 7 minutes or less via a short fictional tale, reportage or documentary.

The best submissions will be projected throughout the Festival and the two winners will receive cash prizes, the Golden Screen (€1000) and the Silver Screen (€500).

Volunteers for Cork Film Festival – 1st September 2008

Cork Film Festival is currently looking for volunteers to participate in the 53rd edition of the Festival, which will take place 12–19 October, 2008.

Volunteer work is available in the following areas: Box Office, Venues, Print Transport, Production, Guest Reception, Press Reception and Market Research.

Benefits to be gained include free passes to screenings, meeting Irish and international delegates and learning new skills.

Irish Productions Nominated for PRIX EUROPA – 29th August 2008

This year's nominations for the biggest European competition for television, radio and emerging media PRIX EUROPA 2008 have been announced. 213 productions from 31 European countries are running in the eight categories. During the festival week, which runs 18–25 October, they will be competing for one of the twelve Taurus Trophies, which will be awarded during the Prize-Giving Gala in Berlin.

More than 1000 participants are expected for PRIX EUROPA 2008. The festival has a unique, transparent jury system, which aims to stimulate dialogue between international journalists, media-makers and managers in big open jury groups. Every participant who takes part in all the presentations and discussions of one category has a vote. It is also possible to register as an observer and sample different juries. The aim is to promote quality programmes under the label ‘Made in Europe’ and incite a lively exchange on the international media market.

At the end of the festival week twelve winners will each be awarded €6000 and the official PRIX EUROPA Trophy.

The following productions from Ireland were nominated for the competition 2008:
In the category of TV Fiction: Kings, directed by Tom Collins, entered by TG4, and Whistleblower, directed by Dermot Boyd, entered by RTÉ. In the TV Documentary category: Being John Banville, directed by Charlie McCarthy, entered by RTÉ. For TV Current Affairs: Prime Time Investigates - Cocaine, directed by Paul Loughlin and Sean Mac Giolla Phádraig, entered by RTÉ. As a TV IRIS Multicultural Programme: Human Traffic, directed by David Whelan, entered by RTÉ. Test Screening in Dublin – 28th August 2008

Waterford Film Festival Deadline – 28th August 2008

The deadline for submissions to the Waterford Film Festival is Monday the 1st of September.

The festival welcomes local, national and international films and is open to any form of genre, with five categories including: Feature Film, Feature Documentary, Short Film, Short Documentary and Best First Short Film.

The festival website has been updated and can now accept submissions online or by post. There are cash prizes and and Crystal Awards for first place in all categories, with the Crystal Awards being sponsored by Waterford Crystal.

Film Legend Ennio Morricone to Perform at Queen’s – 19th August 2008

Ennio Morricone, the Italian maestro behind some of the most instantly recognisable film music of the last forty years, will perform his only UK and Ireland engagements this year at the Opening Concert of the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s on 17–18 October at the Waterfront Hall.

This is a rare live appearance by the Oscar-winning® film legend who scored Sergio Leone’s 1960s Westerns: A Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; Once Upon a Time in the West and A Fistful of Dynamite. Morricone also scored other iconic films including Once Upon a Time in America, Days of Heaven, The Untouchables, Cinema Paradiso and The Mission.

Ennio Morricone has won five BAFTAs for Best Score and been nominated five times for an Oscar®. He received an Honorary Academy Award in 2007 ‘for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music’. He is only the second composer in Oscar® history to be honoured with such an award.

Since 2001, Ennio Morricone has played only very selective engagements in landmark cities including London, Paris, New York, Vienna and Tokyo. For the festival Morricone will conduct the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra and Belfast Philharmonic Choir, with over 100 musicians flying to Belfast especially for the occasion.

Scriptapalooza Television Writing Competition – 19th August 2008

Supported by the Writers Guild of America West and the Writers Guild of Canada, Scriptapalooza Television Writing Competition has seen major success in its nine years: two winning writers have won Emmys, and another winner currently writes for Comedy Central.

The four competition categories include existing one-hour shows like Boston Legal and Desperate Housewives; existing half-hour sitcoms like The Office and Two and a Half Men; original pilots and reality shows. Scriptapalooza now accepts submissions by e-mail.

Gabriel Byrne to receive Gregory Peck Award at Dingle – 19th August 2008

Gabriel Byrne has been announced as the first recipient of the Gregory Peck Award for Excellence in the Art of Film at the 2008 Dingle Film Festival. Byrne, who is nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in HBO's In Treatment, will be in Dingle to receive the award.

Kevin Moriarty, MD of Ardmore Studios, will present Byrne with the award following a special screening of A Conversation with Gregory Peck on the Friday night of the festival in The Phoenix Cinema. Its producer, Cecilia Peck and director Barbara Kopple will introduce the film to the audience. Irish poet Medbh McGuckian has written a poem on Gregory Peck, which she will recite at the event. Mr. Pecks wife, Veronique and son, Anthony will also be travelling from LA for the occasion.

To close the festival Cecilia Peck will introduce a special screening of her father’s definitive role as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird for which he was awarded the Oscar® for Best Actor.

Premiere of Electric Picnic '06: The Documentary– 18th August 2008

Electric Picnin '06: The Documentary, presented by POD Concerts and Aiken Promotions and directed by Nick Ryan, will premiere on Thursday 23rd August, 10.30 pm at the IFI.

Songs covered in full form the backbone of the film, but it is also a ‘people-watching extravaganza,’ which features live performances from Davendra Bernhart, New Order, Alabama 3, Broken Social Scene and Basement Jaxx.

Women’s Film Deadline Extended – 18th August 2008

The deadline for the Women's International Film & Television Showcase has been extended to 1st October 2008.

The new showcase, which will take place in Hollywood 4–7 December,
recognizes the talents of women in film and television, focusing on the work of women producers, directors and cinematographers from around the world. Founded by Craig Prater, formerly creative director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Bangkok International Film Festival, and Elspeth Tavares, publisher and editor of the film industry trade paper, The Business of Film, The WIFTS has been endorsed by the City of West Hollywood and the West Hollywood Marketing and Visitors Bureau.

It will open with a world premiere and will include screenings of sixteen new films as well as seminars and discussion panels. The event will close with an awards ceremony. Awards will include the Entrepreneurial Award to a woman ‘whose talent has exhibited a new approach to filmmaking, acting or the entertainment business world’ as well as awards for best film, best director, best cinematography, pre-eminent breakout role, and career and lifetime achievement awards. Some awards will be honorary and others will be selected by a jury of established film executives and celebrities.

Irish Director to Premiere Short in LA– 18th August 2008

Writer/director Donal Foreman will be attending the screening of his film Removal in Los Angeles on August 20th as part of VisionFest, an annual gala screening and awards ceremony organised by Filmmakers Alliance.

In its 11th year, Filmmakers Alliance’s annual screening and celebration VisionFest will be held at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex.

The awards begin with the presentation of the Vision Award to an established filmmaker whose artistic ambition and excellence has inspired emerging filmmakers around the world. Past recipients include Mike Figgis, Terry Gilliam, Wim Wenders, Allison Anders, Alexander Payne, David O. Russell and Werner Herzog.

This year's Vision Award recipient is filmmaker Kevin Smith.

The awards will be preceded by a special Community Vision Award to Los Angeles FilmForum and the endowment of the Los Angeles Short Filmmaking Grant and will be followed by a screening of the best short films produced through Filmmakers Alliance in the past year.

Irish Film Kisses to Screen at Toronto – 18th August 2008

The Irish film Kisses directed by Lance Daly (The Halo Effect, Last Days in Dublin), with funding from the Irish Film Board, will receive its North American premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, which takes place from 4–13 September 2008. The Toronto International Film Festival ranks among the most distinguished international film festivals in the world, is an important festival for breaking into the North American market and receives over 4000 submissions annually.

Kisses picked up the award for Best Irish Film at the Galway Film Fleadh where it received its Irish premiere. This prize has previously been awarded to Irish films Adam & Paul, Pavee Lackeen and Intermission. The film has also already received international recognition having been selected to screen at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. 

Kisses stars newcomers 12-year-old Kelly O'Neill and Shane Curry as Kylie and Dylan, two young kids who decide to run away from their dysfunctional homes and spend a night on the streets of Dublin's inner city. Produced by Macdara Kelleher with Fastnet Films (The Halo Effect, Tonight is Cancelled), the film was funded from BSÉ/IFB, Film I Vast, the BCI , TV3, and Zentropa. Element Distribution have also come on board the project and are set to release Kisses in Irish cinemas later this year.

Dublin Zoo’s Film Footage to Go to Irish Film Archive – 15th August 2008

The Irish Film Archive has announced the deposit of The Dublin Zoo Film Collection. Dublin Zoo, a landmark attraction for generations of Irish families, was captured on by film Dr Terry Murphy, former director of the Zoo, through the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. The collection numbers almost 70 cans of film and includes chimps’ tea parties, baby sea lions, the birth of a giraffe, tiger cubs and trips to Africa. The collection also includes Universal Irish newsreel footage showing popular singer and actress Petula Clarke visiting the zoo in December 1952 on the occasion of the arrival of 'Happy' the lion club.

Kasandra O'Connell, Head of the Irish Film Archive, accepted the deposit from Leo Oosterweghel, the present director of the Zoo. The collection will be meticulously catalogued by Archive staff and preserved in climate-controlled vaults to be enjoyed by current and future generations.

Over 55’s Film Club Screens Surprise Movie – 15th August 2008

The Pictures monthly film club for over 55’s will this month screen a surprise movie. To date the film club has shown a stellar line-up of movies including foreign language films (The Lives of Others), Irish films (The New Matchmakers), comedies (Little Miss Sunshine, About Schmidt), drama (The Painted Veil) and old classics (Casablanca and Some Like It Hot).

The club was launched by axis, Ballymun and Dublin City Council Arts Office in association with the Irish Film Institute and access Cinema in January with a screening of the classic comedy Some Like It Hot. The Pictures shows one screening per month of all genres of fims in axis arts and community resource centre, Ballymun.

The screening will take place in axis arts and community resource centre, Ballymun at 2.30 pm on Monday, 25th August. Members are invited to the axis Café prior to the films to enjoy a cuppa or a bite to eat. Tickets are €2 for members, €4 for non-members with membership costing €2.

Veteran Actor David Kelly at the IFI – 13th August 2008

The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) is to hold an intimate evening ‘In Conversation’ with veteran Irish actor David Kelly at the IFI on Sunday, 17 August.

Academy members and attending special guests will have the opportunity to be part of a conversation with one of Ireland’s most popular and respected actors of the stage and screen.

In 2005, David Kelly was the recipient of the IFTA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by co-star and friend Colm Meaney, with director Tim Burton, Irish actors Colin Farrell and Milo O’Shea and co-star Johnny Depp among those paying tribute to the 79-year-old actor.

With a career that spans over six decades, David Kelly’s feature film credits include Stardust, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Waking Ned and Into the West, while his television appearances include roles in Strumpet City, Fawlty Towers, Robin’s Nest and Glenroe. David’s latest work has been on Spanish thriller The Kovak Box alongside Oscar-winning® actor Timothy Hutton.

Be Entertainment Writers/Illustrators Competition – 13th August 2008

Be Entertainment, the producers of Sofia’s Diary on Bebo and Channel 5, and Aisling’s Diary on RTÉ have announced the Superheroes and Villains Writers and Illustrators Competition.

The production company is looking for new writers and illustrators for cross media Internet and TV series, who can write compelling characters and/or illustrate for teen drama and fantasy. To enter the competition, the Northern Ireland-based writer/illustrator should create the ultimate geek, nerd, loser or quirky character who is then transformed into a hero. Alternatively, the writer/illustrator can create a compelling real-life/fantasy villain.

Applicants should send a 2000 word character description of the hero or villain set in the real world, sci-fi/fantasy world. The description should include something of the characters’ world and background, how they are turned into a super hero or villain and their goal and motivation and their special powers.

Deadline for all submissions is 31st September.  Multiple entries are permitted and the winner will be notified 3 weeks after the deadline. The winner will receive a £1000 Sterling development deal with Be Entertainment.

IFI Screens 70 mm Prints – 11th August 2008

The IFI is to present special screenings of two of the greatest films of all time. Special 70 mm prints of Lawrence of Arabia and Vertigo are to be screened this August. Lawrence of Arabia is screening as part of the IFI’s David Lean season, while the screening of the 1996 restoration of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo marks the film’s 50th anniversary.

The IFI is the only cinema in Ireland equipped to show 70 mm film. At twice the size of standard 35 mm prints, 70 mm represents the highest possible quality in a theatrical presentation.

Summer of the Flying Saucer Opens on 8th August – 11th August 2008

Following its premiere at the Cinemagic Film Festival for Young People in April of this year, Summer of the Flying Saucer, the new film from Irish filmmaker Martin Duffy, is released in selected Irish cinemas on August 8th. The film, which stars Robert Sheehan, Dan Colley and Hugh O’Connor, is a nostalgic coming-of-age story set in the 1960s in a rural community in Co. Mayo. The film was written by Marteinn Thorisson and produced by Galway-based Magma Films, with award-winning cinematographer Seamus Deasy as DOP.

Screening of Missed... on RTÉ 2 – 11th August 2008

RTÉ 2 will screen short film Missed… on November 10th. Written, produced and directed by Maureen O’Connell, the film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh 2007 and has since been screened at Futureshorts Ireland, and was shortlisted by the New York International Children’s Film Festival 2008. Missed… stars Sinead Monaghan, Jordan-Lee McGrath Marriane McCullen and Rachel Rath.
