Carney began his career making award-winning shorts Shining Star & Hotel, before moving into music videos for The Frames. His debut feature, November Afternoon, a low-budget black-&-white drama, was named Best Feature of 1997 by The Irish Times. He followed with Just in Time, then Park & On the Edge. His breakthrough came with Once (2006), which won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance. He later directed Begin Again, Sing Street, Modern Love, Flora and Son & Power Ballad.
