Beginning in theatre before moving into television, he wrote for acclaimed series including The Secret Life of Us, Love My Way, and Puberty Blues, which he co-created. His debut film The Rage in Placid Lake won major awards. He later wrote and directed Ashby. McNamara gained international acclaim for The Favourite, earning an Oscar nomination and BAFTA win, and created the hit series The Great.
