UK director Phyllida Lloyd was born in 1957 in Nempnett Thrubwell, Somerset. After studying drama at Birmingham University, she worked with BBC Television Drama and in regional theatre. She rose to prominence with Six Degrees of Separation (1992) at the Royal Court. A leading stage director, she is best known for Mamma Mia! (1999) and its 2008 film. Her credits include The Iron Lady (2011) and Irish film Herself (2020), alongside acclaimed all-female Shakespeare productions.
