James is a filmmaker from St. Louis, Missouri, who first gained notoriety writing & directing titles like Slither (2006), Super (2010) & Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (2014–2023. Gunn also wrote and directed DC projects including The Suicide Squad (2021) & the HBO Max series Peacemaker. In 2022, he & producer Peter Safran were appointed co-chairmen & co-CEOs of DC Studios. His father's family descended from Irish immigrants and & the family name was originally derived from the name MacGilgunn.
