James grew up in North Yorkshire & discovered a love of acting early, playing Joseph in his school nativity. After Ampleforth College, he gained experience at the Stephen Joseph Theatre before studying theology at Cambridge and travelling to Nepal, where he developed an interest in Buddhism. Returning to London, he trained at RADA, graduating in 2010, & landed a small role in An Education. He soon built a stage career before acting for screen in Mr Turner, Belle, Happy Valley, & Grantchester.
