She is widely recognised for her award-winning stage career, winning two Laurence Olivier Awards for People, Places & Things & Angels in America, eating a Tony Award nomination for the latter. Gough has appeared in a number of roles for screen including Colette, The Other Lamb, Monday, Jimmy’s Hall, '71, Andor, Too Close, Paula, Under the Banner of Heaven and The Fall.
